She recommends they stay in touch with comrades who have already made their way into the workforce. Those contacts could be vital in landing the next job.
Whiteman has written the book 'How to Land a Top Paying Federal Job' for both military veterans and civilians.
She says even the negotiation process for a job offer is something to be considered. "Salaries in the federal government are highly negotiable," she said. She recommends approaching salary and compensation as you would any other job. Whiteman says she has seen people get pay increases in the tens of thousands of dollars just for asking.
Whiteman says you don't be intimidated by the bureaucracy when looking for a job. In fact, she says: "the federal government is hiring in droids unlike the private sector as we all know."
"The first step is to go to the federal jobs website which is USAJobs.gov," Whiteman says. She also recommends visiting the individual websites of government agencies, which might have more postings on them. You can access links to those agencies by going to FirstGov.gov.
Her advice, "target the agencies you are interested in the most."
Whiteman says networking is a very important of the hunt as well. She recommends job hunters seek out professional organizations. Find them on the web, and get involved!
